Ihre Website ist keine Broschüre

Die meisten Websites kleiner Unternehmen sind zum Lesen gebaut. Die guten sind zum Benutzen gebaut.

Open the website of almost any small business and you'll find the same structure: Home, About, Services, Contact. It's the shape of a printed brochure, translated to the screen. It describes the business. It rarely helps anyone do anything.

Start from the visitor's next step

Before designing a single page, list the three things a visitor most needs to do. For a guesthouse: check availability, see the rooms, understand the price. For a tax firm: find out if you're a fit, see who you'd work with, book a first call.

Those tasks become the backbone of the site. Navigation, page order and calls to action follow from them, not from the org chart.

Write for skimmers, then for readers

Most visitors scan headings and buttons before deciding to read. If your headings are slogans, a skimmer learns nothing. Make every heading say something specific, and let the paragraph underneath add the detail.

Make the last step easy

  • Ask only for what you need to reply well. Every extra form field costs enquiries.
  • Say what happens after someone gets in touch, and roughly when.
  • Offer a second route — email or phone — for people who don't like forms.
  • Show clear errors and a clear confirmation. Silence after 'Submit' feels like failure.

Then measure, and keep going

A website is never finished on launch day. Track the handful of actions that matter, look at them monthly and change one thing at a time. That is the difference between a brochure and a tool.
